TEST DETAILS

So far we have prepared three tests for Linux/Unix applicants: C, Perl, and PHP test. And the good news is that you need to take only one of them!

We prefer test be done at your place but it's possible do it in one of our offices as well. You need to get an appointment for the test. To get it E-mail us with the date and time, when you can take the test. We usually are online during working hours, and sometime on weekends. We'll reply to you that the time is acceptable or suggest another one. You'll receive login/password pair as well. You should use your login and password to download test. Tune your environment as described below before download the test. We count test time from the download moment.

The tests lasts approximately four hours. You are welcome to contact us either over Jabber or ICQ (details below) during the test. When finished send us back the result by E-mail. That is it.

What if I overrun test time?

Do not panic, it is actually up to you. If you feel your skill will be better represented by taking extra time, but finishing the work, go ahead, and take your time. On the other hand, if you are seriously behind, just submit what you have.

C test

We'll test your ability to understand C code written by others as well as your ability to extend it in a clean way. During the test, we will give you a smallish C library to understand and ask you to extend it.

What do I need to take the test?

• 4 hours of spare time in front of a computer with
  • access to compiler gcc 2.96 or later
  • access to Unix-ish environment (Linux or Cygwin under Windows is known to work)
  • access to your E-mail (to send us the result back)
  • access to the web to download the test itself

C++ Linux guru design exercise

Design exercise is intended specially for guru position. This is small part of some project which we expect can be done by applicant. Spend time what you feel you can afford given your other commitments and the complexity of the task. The task is to provide an architecture specification for high-performance multi-threaded HTTP server based on libevent C library. We expect you provide us with a kind of timesheet in the following format:

date, start time, end time, topic

Perl test

What the test is about

We'll test your ability to understand Perl code written by others as well as your ability to extend it in a clean way. During the test, we will give you a smallish CPAN module to understand and ask you to write an extension.

What do I need to take the test?

• 4 hours of spare time in front of a computer with
  • recent Perl (5.6.1 or better)
  • access to CPAN
  • ability to download and install CPAN modules during the test
  • access to your E-mail

PHP test

What the test is about

We'll test your ability to read source code. The test task is to extend and fix existing code. Focus on reusing existing code to accomplish every sub-task. Please treat existing code as a part of working system — it's very similar to the one we use in production, so these are almost real tasks you should accomplish.

What do I need to take the test?

• 4 hours of spare time in front of a computer with
  • recent PHP (5.1.2 or better) with mysql and mysqli support
  • recent MySQL database server (5.0.XX or better) with rights to create databases/tables on it
  • access to your E-mail

C# test

We'll test your ability to understand C# code written by others as well as your ability to extend it in a clean way. During the test, we will give you some C# class to understand and ask you to extend it.

What do I need to take the test?

• 2 hours of spare time in front of a computer with
  • Visual Studio 2005 with Microsoft Visual C# 2005
  • access to your E-mail (to send us the result back)
  • access to the web to download the test itself

To give you an idea of the skills that are needed in our projects, and to provide us with something concrete to discuss during the interview, we are giving you three tasks.
